PROJECT: WE THE LIMINAL
It has taken me a lifetime to realize that, at some level, we are all liminal beings. We have the potential to inhabit our different ‘selves’ yet are caught up in societal structures of fixed identities, making black and white choices and shunning the ambiguities of the grey zone.
Trans people have the courage to accept the fluidity of the self, rise above this false duality, and present their truth to the world. My intention is to make Trans people visible, in India and around the world. I spend time in their environment, connect with them, and make images that reflect their vision of themselves, all the while avoiding comfortable stereotypes.
I grew up in a conservative Indian family in Mumbai, where I felt compelled to fit in and stifle my true self. Even though my ‘otherness’ is not the same as that of Trans people, I see in them shades of my own lived experience: the disconnect between their inner and outer selves.
The world needs to hear their truth.
